Who are freelancers? The term was first coined by Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) in a place called Ivanhoe to define a “medieval mercenary warrior”, “free-lance” where the term lance refers to as a warrior who has not sworn particularly to one Lord but is available and is free of charge. This word changed to a noun and was recognized as a verb by different authorities to make it a part of English language in 1860s and 1903 respectively. Now it has also morphed into an adjective and an adverb (A freelance photographer and a photographer who freelances respectively).
According to some modern dictionaries like Merriam Webster a freelancer means:
1. a usually free lance : a mercenary soldier especially of the Middle Ages : condottiere b : a person who acts independently without being affiliated with or authorized by an organization
2. a person who pursues a profession without a long-term commitment to any one employer According to www.thefreedictionary.com a free lancer is given as,1. A person who sells services to employers without a long-term commitment to any of them. 2. An uncommitted independent, as in politics or social life. 3. A medieval mercenary. V. freelanced, freelancing, freelances v.intr. To work as a freelance: a journalist who freelances. v.tr. To produce and sell as a freelance: freelanced the article to a magazine publisher. adj. Of, relating to, or working as a freelance.
These are what the dictionaries have to say but in the cyberspace, what a freelancer really mean is a person who sitting anywhere(most of the time at home) working with certain projects that he is specialized in a specified time. So, he goes to the internet to certain websites where there are contractors looking for people who want to work with them. Thus an online contract between the two is formed and over the internet the contractors give them work and the work is delivered by the freelancers. There are very wide spectrum of people who freelance, mostly are categorized into the following categories. Professionals who’s only source of income is freelancing,Part time workers,and Managerial freelancers.
"An Uncommitted Independent" - that's who freelancers are.
An Uncommitted Independent don't travel to go to work/office. He does not mind when to to sleep and when to wake up as long as his deadlines are met. He works while dressed for comfort. He has more time to spent with his Family, his dog, his workout routines, play the guitar, read books and most specially his self. He has more time. Thus, his making the best out of his life. This is what happens when your Freelancing Business is working for you, not you, working for it.
As history explains it, freelancers are first used in war. Now it' your time to start the war and fight for your fate - being successful Artist!
